Wayzata vs Orono for Families — How I Help Buyers Choose
5 min read · Published June 30, 2026 · By Bryce Caldwell

Wayzata and Orono sit minutes apart on Lake Minnetonka, but they offer families two different lives. Wayzata is walkable and social; Orono is private and spread out. Here's how I help buyers decide between them.
Which town costs more?
Wayzata carries the higher median list price, around $2.25M, because you are paying for the address and the walkability on smaller lots. Orono's median is roughly $1.65M, but that buys you acreage rather than proximity.
Dollar for dollar, Orono gives you more land and Wayzata gives you more location. Neither is a better deal — they are answers to different questions.
How do the schools compare?
Most of Wayzata is in District 284, rated #1 in Minnesota, while Orono has its own well-regarded District 278. Both are strong, so schools rarely settle this decision on their own.
I always check the exact attendance boundary before we tour, because a few streets in western Wayzata actually fall into the Orono district.
What is daily life like in each?
In Wayzata you walk to dinner, the farmers market, and the beach. In Orono you drive everywhere, but you come home to privacy and space you cannot get across the lake.
Families with young kids who want to be in the middle of things tend to prefer Wayzata. Families who want room to spread out lean Orono.
Bryce’s take
When a client leads with the word walkable, I show them Wayzata. When they lead with privacy or acreage, I show them Orono. Naming that priority out loud on day one saves everyone weeks of looking at the wrong houses.

Key takeaways
- Wayzata's median list price is about $2.25M; Orono's is about $1.65M — but Orono buys acreage while Wayzata buys walkable location.
- Wayzata is mostly in the #1-rated District 284; Orono has its own strong District 278. Both are excellent.
- Choose Wayzata for walkability and downtown life; choose Orono for privacy, larger lots, and a quieter setting.
- Some western Wayzata streets fall into the Orono school district — always confirm the boundary before making an offer.
